How to use it

Enter your stock entry price, your stop-loss price, and how many shares you hold. The calculator returns the total dollars you’d lose if the stop is hit, that loss as a percentage of your entry, the risk per share, and the position’s value.

The math

loss = |entry − stop| × shares, and the percentage is the per-share loss divided by the entry. It’s the fastest way to check that a stock trade’s risk fits your plan before you take it — and it pairs naturally with the position size calculator, which works the other direction to set your share count from a target risk.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a stock stop-loss?

Your loss per share is the distance between your entry and your stop price. Multiply that by your share count for the total dollar loss, and divide the per-share loss by the entry price for the percentage. Entry $100, stop $95, 100 shares is $500 (5%).

Where should I place a stock stop-loss?

Choose the price that proves your trade idea wrong — below a support level, beyond a moving average, or outside the stock’s normal range — rather than a round percentage. Then size the position so the loss at that stop fits your risk budget.

What percentage stop-loss should I use on stocks?

There’s no single right number; it depends on the stock’s volatility and your timeframe. Volatile names need wider stops (and therefore smaller positions) than steady ones. Let the chart set the stop and let your risk budget set the size.
